Ferns

Additional Information

Polystichum tripteron USDA Zones 6-9

Ferns are valued for their interesting textures and shades of green and gray, sometimes accented by other colors.

They are enjoying increased popularity both indoors and in the outdoor garden.

  • Hardy ferns are an essential element of the shade garden. They need a well-drained, humus-rich soil, and regular irrigation. Hardy ferns are a wonderful contrast to bold textures such as hostas. They can be massed to make a beautiful woodland groundcover.
  • Tender ferns are wonderful pot plants. In pots the subtle beauty of their diverse frond shapes is easily seen. All require well-drained soil mix with some humus. Most should be kept evenly moist, but Pyrrosia and Davallia like to dry out between waterings. In general, ferns like to be cooler in the winter when they are somewhat dormant.
