Cymbidium goeringii

In Japan these orchids have been grown as ornamental pot plants for hundreds of years. The wild species of Cymbidium goeringii grows in woods in Japan, China, and Korea in pockets of humus among rocks and trees.

The Japanese have selected many forms with variegated foliage, some with striped flowers, as well as new flower colors and forms. These selections are very rare and expensive, although they are not especially difficult to grow.

  • Cymbidium goeringii can be grown outside in a Zone 7 or milder location in a well-drained spot with light to medium shade.
  • Inside it prefers a bright location with no direct sun.
  • Temperatures during the winter months should ideally be between 35 F and 55 F. (cold greenhouse, enclosed porch, or cold windowsill).
  • They prefer well-drained soil (ideally orchid bark). The pseudobulbs should be planted just above the soil level.
  • During the winter months, keep the plants on the dry side as they are prone to rot. Increase the frequency of watering as the flowers appear in early spring (they still want to dry a little between waterings).
  • Fertilize during the summer months with orchid fertilizer or liquid kelp.
  • Cut back on watering in fall to encourage blooms and to prevent rotting.
