I got this plant in south central Uganda, when my friend Rogers Machabire stopped our car at the roadside to buy some spectacular clusters of fruit from some young boys. The clusters are about a foot across. They said that the fruit is from a wild plant in wet places on the savannah. The hard torpedo-shaped fruits shine like red lacquer. Inside is a juicy white pulp which is edible; it tastes like star fruit. Rogers ate most of the fruit and I got the seeds. The plants are typical "ginger" in habit with upright linear green leaves, to about 6 feet tall. The flowers are pink, very showy and orchid-like. The fruits and flowers are borne on short stalks near the ground. Synonym: A. sanguineum. USDA Zones 10-11.
Grown in 3.5" pots. Oversized: counts as 2 plant units for shipping.
