All Amsonia species (bluestar) are valuable garden plants. They do well in light to moderate shade, and tolerate dry conditions. They have attractive foliage that often has a good yellow fall color. The Asian species, Amsonia elliptica, has proved itself here to be one of the easiest and most reliable perennials for late spring bloom. The normal type has pale to medium blue flowers; this Japanese selection with white flowers will brighten the shade garden. USDA Zones 5-9.
