The species Coniogramme intermedia is widespread in East Asia; it is a terrestrial clumping fern with glossy, pinnately compound leaves. This rare Japanese horticultural mutation grows to about a foot tall with glossy, somewhat pinnatedly compound leaves, but the pinnae are wildly crested and frilled. The Japanese name means "lion". USDA Zones 8-10.
