Gardeners in cold climates know the joy that indoor plants can provide in cold winter months. The popularity of many of the familiar groups of tender plants is on the rise; plants indoors make us feel happier and can make us healthier. Research has found that as few as five plants in a room can make the indoor atmosphere cleaner, removing benzene, carbon monoxide, and a wide variety of other dangerous compounds. Those fortunate to live in a sub-tropical or tropical climate can enjoy an unlimited range of variation of foliage and flowers in containers or in the garden.
The major reason for failure with indoor plants is overwatering. Most plants should dry slightly before watering. Frequent misting is very helpful and a summer vacation outdoors in shade reinvigorates most plants. Be sure to start in heavy shade to avoid burning the leaves.
All of us can enjoy "indoor-outdoor" gardening, raising tender plants in decorative containers and moving them in and out of the house depending on the season, or simply to freshen the indoor-outdoor landscape. Some of the best groups to use this way are Alocasia, Crinum, Ficus, Hoya, and various palms, but most any tropical plant can be adapted to this treatment.
