This is the rarely seen wild form of Adonis with cheerful yellow flowers in late winter, from northern Japan and Korea. Here in southern Pennsylvania the flowers often appear in January. The plant is more graceful than the commonly grown cultivar 'Fukujukai'.
There is no more beautiful winter-blooming perennial for cold climates than Adonis, or pheasant's eye. This NE Asian species likes rich, well-drained soil with lots of humus that is moist in spring during the growing season. The very showy yellow flowers bloom as early as January here in Pennsylvania when the temperatures are above freezing, closing up and waiting out cold spells. It is not unusual to see the flowers displayed against the snow. The fern-like foliage is pretty in spring, disappearing by early summer. Best in deciduous shade where it will get sun in early spring and shade later on. In Japan it is one of the essential flowers for welcoming the new year, often sold in small container gardens in bloom. Selected named varieties have been grown for hundreds of years.
